"Raise My Taxes, Please"
Monday, December 6, 2010(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
"I am one of the District's high-income earners, one of the
thousands of professionals with a household income of more than $200,000 a
year," says Barbara Kagan. "A moderate increase in my taxes is no more than a
daily cup of coffee. But it will mean a lot more to this city." In her recent WAMU 88.5 commentary, Kagan urged
Mayor-elect Gray and DC Council Chairman-elect Kwame Brown, to support a
proposal "to raise income taxes on people like me." That proposal will get a big
push tomorrow when labor and community groups gather in front of the Wilson
Building at 9A to urge the Council to "Make The Better Choice - Invest in
Priorities that Put DC to Work!" The District's political leaders "can decide to
make a different choice, one which balances budget cuts with new progressive
revenue," said AFGE's Johnnie Walker. "By raising taxes by just one percentage
point on households with income over $200,000 a year, the city can raise $66
million dollars - enough to protect the safety-net programs" that many city
residents depend on. Click here to email
