Monday, March 28, 2005(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
SEIU Local 82, Justice for Janitors, DC is the Washington DC Metro
Area’s Building Service Union representing over 7,000 janitors in DC, MD and
VA. Local 82’s website is a great
resource for members and non-members alike, providing up-to-date info on the
local’s ongoing campaigns like the effort by thousands of DC-area security
officers to win the better wages and benefits. In addition to sections on how to
become a member organizer, get involved in political or online activism and
more, the Local 82 website provides a history of the local, which was chartered
in 1937 “to improve the lives of apartment house firemen and janitors who
worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with no holidays off, no vacation, no
sick leave, low pay and little respect.” The history includes a photo of the
famous 14th St. Bridge blockade in 1995 “to bring attention to DC janitors
fight for a contract and economic justice for working people in
Washington.” Plus: now you can find 36 Metro Council affiliates online
with just one click! Go to the Council’s website and click on “Links” and
