“Thanks to my union, I work with the most highly trained
people in the industry and I know I will come home safe every night,” lineman
apprentice Deborah Kelly (l) testified Tuesday in the Senate Health, Education,
Labor and Pensions Committee in support of the Employee Free Choice Act, which
was later introduced in the U.S. House and Senate. AFL-CIO President John
Sweeney called it “a banner day for working Americans, a milestone on the road
to rebuilding our nation’s middle class.” While Carol Pier of Human Rights
Watch, one of the dozens of organizations backing the Employee Free Choice Act,
said that “Congress should bring worker protections closer to international
standards by passing the Employee Free Choice Act.” Meanwhile, over 100 labor
leaders and staff gathered at the National Labor College for the 2-day
AFL-CIO’s Turn Around America Northeast Regional Conference with a major focus
on mobilizing support for the Free Choice Act, healthcare and rebuilding the
economy for working and middle-class American families.
