Workers Demand Voice At Capitol Rally Today

Wednesday, February 4, 2009

(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)

The voices of millions of workers will be heard today when thousands of workers and labor allies deliver more than a million cards and petitions demanding swift passage of the Employee Free Choice Act. The noontime rally is part of labor's push to turn around the economy and make it work for everyone by restoring workers' freedom to form unions and bargain. Despite strong public support for the freedom to bargain in the workplace, the Employee Free Choice Act has come under heavy fire from big-money corporate lobbyists and shady front groups hoping to defeat it and preserve corporate domination over the process. "We like driving the car,"  Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott said recently, "and we're not going to give the steering wheel to anybody but us." Today's rally features workers speaking out and the delivery of the petitions to Congress.
