Tuesday, September 5, 2006

(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)

Ida Ruben, State Senate:  Ruben has compiled an exemplary labor record during her 31 years of elective office. Currently serving as President Pro Tem of the Senate and a member of the powerful Budget & Taxation Committee, Ruben used her influence most recently to make sure that the Senate overrode Governor Ehrlich’s veto of the minimum wage increase and expanded health care.             Sheila Hixon, State Delegate:  A member of the House of Delegates for 30 years, Hixson has risen to chair the influential Ways & Means Committee. She has been a reliable ally of working families and was instrumental in closing the infamous “Delaware Holding Company” loophole where many big corporations avoided Maryland’s income tax.  Learn more about Hixson at http://www.sheilahixson.us/

Gareth Murray, State Delegate:  Murray was elected in 2002 with labor support. As a freshman legislator, he has been unusually effective — passing 5 bills where he was the principal sponsor in 2006.  He is a strong supporter of a statewide “Living  Wage” bill and Murray (along with District 14 Herman Taylor) became the first African-American from Montgomery County to serve in the state legislature.  Find out more about Gareth at http://www.friendsofgarethemurray.com/

Tom Hucker, State Delegate:  Hucker has been a successful advocate for working families, leading the fight for a Montgomery County “Living Wage” law, increased state funds for education, expanded health care coverage and an increase in the minimum wage. Hucker has a strong track record proving he can make real changes.  Learn more about Hucker at http://www.hucker4delegate.com/
