CSA Helps to Build Futures

Friday, February 8, 2008

The Community Service Agency’s (CSA) Building Futures Program “makes you like a top draft choice out there in the workforce,” said Daryl McNeil following a four-hour math tutorial course that will help him to pass the application test for a spot in a union construction apprenticeship program. McNeil – a former member of the Army and telecommunications worker – ran into some tough times after his military service but sees his participation in the Building Futures Program as a way to turn his life around and become a model father for his 11 year-old son. “I get a lot of positive reinforcement and help in bringing me up to speed in areas that I am weak in to make me competitive in the workplace.” McNeil found out about the program through a mentor at the Greater Washington Urban League and sees his participation in the program as a step to big things. “I hope to become a journeyman and start my own business,” said McNeil. McNeil is one of nearly 350 people enrolled in the Building Futures Program this year. The program – started in 2005 with funding from the DC Department of Employment Services – has helped DC residents develop careers in one of 16 union construction apprenticeship programs. “Our goal is to help participants ‘earn while they learn’ and finish with a family-sustaining career,” says CSA Executive Director Kathleen McKirchy.
