Mother Jones: Alive and Still Kicking at 184(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)

It’s turning out to be quite a year for Mother Jones. Once dubbed “the most dangerous woman in America,” Jones’ 184th birthday will be celebrated with a wreath-laying in Silver Spring on May 1 that kicks off the 2014 DC LaborFest next week. On April 12, Jones was inducted into the Irish American Hall of Fame in Cork, Ireland, where she was born. A restoration of her monument in the Union Miners' Cemetery in Mount Olive, Illinois, is scheduled to occur within the next year, reports Larry Spivack, Regional Director of AFSCME Council 31 in Chicago. “Mother Jones exhorted us to ‘Pray for the dead and fight like hell for the living’ so it’s only fitting that her spirit is alive and still kicking today,” says AFSCME 2910 president Saul Schniderman, who’s organizing the May 1 wreath-laying. The wreath is being provided by Union Plus via their flower service.
