The
Community Services Agency has been accepted as a preferred training provider by
the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA), joining the apprenticeship programs
of Plumbers and Pipefitters UA Local 5, Iron Workers Local 5, Mid-Atlantic
Carpenters Training Centers, and Steamfitters UA 602 approved in the first round
for the Purple Line Project. The Economic
Empowerment Program Office of MTA will be overseeing workforce development
programs with an eye to boosting hiring and training of Maryland residents for
these jobs once the project comes on-line. The Baltimore Red Line is also part
of this program. “We are really looking forward to working with MTA and
the other employer, non-profit and union partners on this project,” said CSA
Executive Director Kathleen McKirchy. “Through our Building Futures
program we have been able to create a pipeline from the community into
apprenticeships and jobs in construction, and we expect to continue providing
ready-to-work local workers for these jobs.” photo of Building Futures student by Sylvia
