Labor On The Move: David Cohen Retiring from DPE

David Cohen, Executive
Director of the Department for Professional
Employees,
AFL-CIO (DPE), is retiring. A reception in his
honor will be held today,
Wednesday, February 12 from 2-4 pm at the
AFL-CIO (RSVP to Marcie Lawrence at mlawrence@dpeaflcio.org).
Cohen
joined DPE in 2002 and became its Executive
Director in 2006. He worked with
the DPE officers, staff, and affiliated unions
to identify common objectives for
action and led collaboration on public policy,
labor issues, and outreach to
professional associations. At the AFL-CIO
Education Department from 1993 to
2002, Cohen led strategic planning for national
unions, consulted on
organizational development, developed
educational campaign materials, and
taught others to teach. A graduate of Harvard
University and Harvard Law
School, Cohen represented unions and
multiemployer funds at the union law firm
Barr, Peer, Cohen & Camens from 1979 to
1993 and co-edited the 1997 edition
of Construction
Organizing. Cohen's last day at DPE will be
Feb. 14; after that, he can be reached at David3209@aol.com.
Says Cohen, “I count myself very lucky to
have worked with my sisters and brothers in the
labor movement for the remarkable people we
represent, from construction laborers to nurses
to country music
singers.”
