Giant/Safeway Contract Battle Highlights Metro Council Meetings
Friday, October 25, 2013(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
While
celebrating the victory by their new members at Bestway, UFCW Local 400
president Mark Federici emphasized the looming battle for contracts with Giant
and Safeway at Monday’s meetings of the Metro Council Executive
Board and Delegates.
“Giant has been making money off our member’s work for years but they're
greedy
and heartless,” said Federici, who re-joined the Executive Board Monday
night.
He and Community Affairs rep Karina Rosado thanked “everyone who's sent in
letters to Giant and Safeway,” urging area activists to “please continue to
support our members" as the October 31 deadline approaches. Rosado
handed out info flyers and “I Stand with Giant and Safeway Employees”
support
cards that are now available from Local 400. Email her at krosado@local400.org or call 301-459-3400
ext 264. Monday’s meetings included extensive reports on area Streetheat and
solidarity activities, endorsement recommendations to this weekend’s Maryland
State and DC AFL-CIO Convention, Community Service Agency updates and reports
by affiliates; click here for details in the draft minutes.
