Young Democrats Hold Panel Discussion About Labor Tonight
Tuesday, July 23, 2013(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
The Montgomery County Young Democrats (MCYD) will
hold a
panel discussion about the role and importance of labor to the region, economy
and the Democratic Party tonight at 7p in the Silver Spring Civic Center. The
panel features Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee (MCDCC) Chair
Gabe Albornoz, IBEW organizer and Baltimore Young Trade Unionists founder Cory
McCray, and former MCEA President and current State Delegate Bonnie Cullison.
The discussion will be moderated by Maricé Morales, MCYD member and aide to
State Senator Roger Manno. The discussion follows the AFL-CIO boycott and
picket of the Central Committee’s Spring Ball last May, in response to the
Committee’s anti-bargaining position on last year’s Question B referendum
(MCDCC Ball Boycott/Picket Focus is Solidarity UC
5/10/2013). MCYD
President Dave Kunes passed up receiving the “Democrat of the Year” award
at
the Ball in order to join the picket with MCYD’s membership and activists
from
UFCW 1994 MCGEO and Local 400, IAFF 1664, ATU 689, OPEIU 2, Progressive
Maryland, and others. “Our generation is facing historic levels of income
inequality, as well as a 76 year low in the percentage of union membership in
the U.S.,” said MCYD President Dave Kunes. “We have our differences, but I
think everyone involved in this discussion recognizes that we need to stand
together to tackle our region’s broader economic justice issues. Our
discussion
will be focused on solutions that will continue to reverse the nationwide trend
against workers, and what we as Young Democrats can do to continue fighting for
fairness and equality.” MCYD events are open to everyone of any age. Click here for event details and to RSVP. photos: at the May 11 boycott; photos by Julia
