Baltimore CLC Cancels Conference After Caesars Rejects PLA
Thursday, January 3, 2013
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)The Metropolitan Baltimore Council has canceled the 2013 Leadership Conference
in Atlantic City to demonstrate its solidarity with the Maryland Building and
Construction Trades in response to Caesars refusal to enter into a Project Labor
Agreement (see Vance Ayres' "The
case for project labor agreements") in Baltimore. “Baltimore becomes
the only city on the East Coast where Caesars Entertainment Corporation will
build its casino with non-union labor,” says Baltimore CLC President Ernie
Grecco. “I believe this is an insult to every union member in the metropolitan
Baltimore area.” The Baltimore Council’s Executive Board and delegates in
December voted unanimously to cancel the conference after Caesars and Whiting
& Turner Contracting refused to use union labor to build the casino in
Baltimore.
