Schniderman to Receive Joe Hill Award at GLAE Concert Sunday

(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)The lifetime achievements of local labor leader and activist Saul Schniderman
will be in the spotlight at Sunday night’s Great
Labor Arts Exchange concert (7p, Conference Center at the Maritime
Institute’s Auditorium Building #3 ), as Schniderman (at right) is awarded the Joe Hill Award. The Joe Hill
Award honors leaders and artists who have contributed to the successful
integration of arts and culture in the labor movement. Schniderman, president of
AFSCME Local 2910 at the Library of Congress, has a long and colorful history in
labor culture work, including singing in the labor song trio Folkworks, founded
in 1975 to support the Washington Post pressmen, editing Talkin’ Union, a
journal of labor folklore, music and history, from 1980-1988, participating in the USA Labor Culture Tour of Sweden
in 1994. He directs the Inventory of American Labor Landmarks, a project of the
Labor Heritage Foundation, where he’s also served as President, and is on the
advisory board for the DC Labor FilmFest. Pablo Davis,
Detroit artist/activist and assistant painter of the world renowned “Detroit
Industry” mural by Diego Rivera at the Detroit Institute of Arts, will also
receive a Joe Hill Award Sunday night. - photo
